Art in Care Homes

Creative programmes and workshops for care homes

Any care home manager wants to deliver excellent care to their residents and service users. In 2011 the Baring Foundation published a report stating that art in care homes is an integral part of the benchmark for excellence in a care setting. But with the pressure faced by any management team in the care industry, it’s easy to see how planning a varied and engaging arts programme may not be top of the agenda.

“An excellent service supports and enables people to engage in activities, pastimes and roles which bring them pleasure and meaning and enhance their quality of life. ”

The Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE) report ‘Recognising Excellence in Social Care’ published in May 2011 –

It is well documented that people who have the opportunity to engage in the arts enjoy better physical and mental health and a greater sense of well-being.

At SWAW we also passionately believe that creativity and art make a huge difference to someone’s quality of life. We design workshops for elderly people with complex needs such as Dementia and Alzheimer’s. We work with caring and skilled artists who have experience delivering workshops to elderly participants here in the UK.

Age uk estimates that over one million people will have dementia by 2021. With no long term cure on the horizon, the best way to manage this debilitating disease is by easing the symptoms. Working with music has been proven to strengthen memory and appears to unlock memories in dementia sufferers.

‘We tend to remain contactable as musical beings on some level right up to the very end of life,’ says Professor Paul Robertson, a concert violinist and academic who has made a study of music in dementia care (Age UK Website)
