Abstract – to take form, to simplify, to pursue an idea. On this workshop participants will learn the process of abstraction from drawing into painting with artist Ashley Hanson.
With a sequence of exercises exploring colour, mark-making and composition students will learn to simplify, edit, refine, to ’abstract’ and allow a painting to emerge through the process.
During the day, you will look at some of the painters that have influenced the artist’s own work, in particular Cornish artists Peter Lanyon, Patrick Heron and Terry Frost.
This workshop is suitable for all levels of ability and you are free to work in acrylics and/or oils paints.
Ashley has been a Visiting Lecturer at Canterbury Christchurch University for 5 years and has taught at the National Academy of Art, Bergen, Norway, in addition to running his own popular workshops and painting holidays.
His work has been shown extensively throughout the UK and beyond including selection for the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, the Discerning Eye, the National Open Art Competition and the Ludlow Open. He was also voted joint prizewinner of the ‘Canvas & Cream Art Prize’ in London in 2012. His work can currently be seen at Modern Artists Gallery, Reading, the Riverside Gallery, Barnes and The Gloss Gallery, Exeter.
